After yesterdays restoration of power in many locations, many, including this writer, probably expected to wake up this morning, August 31st, to power having been restored to everyone except only the most remote locations. Of course, not only was that not the case but some woke to having lost their power for the first time during this multi-day outage. Dozens of outage reports in the Ferndale area remain on Puget Sound Energy’s list to deal with. These affect over 1,200 PSE customer addresses in the Ferndale area, some now going on the third day without power.
This morning PSE issued this updated timetable for restoring power:
Estimated restoration times below. Note: These are for the last customers [to be restored] in those counties.
South King County: Monday, Aug. 31 at 6 a.m.
Pierce County: Monday, Aug. 31 at 9 p.m. (due to extensive damage the estimated time of restoration has been pushed back from 6 a.m.)
Thurston County: Monday Aug. 31 at 6 a.m.
Whidbey Island: Monday, Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. (due to extensive damage the estimated time of restoration has been pushed back from 2 a.m.)
Whatcom and Skagit counties: Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m.
North King County: Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 6 a.m.
Kitsap County: Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m.
Overnight the winds returned but not with the strength seen Saturday. Gusts between 2am and 3am were recorded in the 40MPH range at a weather station near the high school. Rain also returned, falling in earnest starting after 4am.
Between 5am and 7am, Aldergrove Road, Church Road, Pacific Highlands and other neighborhoods that had so far dodged the outage found themselves in the dark. Many of the same reported power being restored a short time later. Possibly the result of repairs going on and the need to shut of power to effect repairs. Fire was dispatched to a report of a “transformer electrical hazard” on Thornton Road between Church and Captains Way at 5:15am which was nearly the same time as reports of new outages came in from that neighborhood.
Downtown businesses had their power restored yesterday and most if not all should be open for business as usual today except for food services which may be awaiting delivery of replacement food items to replace inventory lost due to lack of refrigeration.
The Food Bank will open an hour later at 10am today. The Senior Center will also be open and serving lunch and activities.
Schools should remain unaffected with the first day of school scheduled for Wednesday of this week and there have been no news releases from the school district over the weekend.
Comcast services remain unavailable for many (although most if not all Comcast Business customers in the area appear to have working services) and there were reports of Frontier services being down for a few this morning.
All phones within the Ferndale School District (including all school campuses) are down for outside calls (staff can call each other within the district but are unable to receive calls or make calls to outside lines). Eagleridge Elementary, Horizon Middle School and Windward High School are without power but the offices are open and staff are there to receive forms, advise parents and provide or handle anything else that does not require computer access. Thornton Road in front of Eagleridge and Horizon is currently accessible but reduced to one lane without a flagger.
