Tonight’s Ferndale City Council had a relatively full agenda. Here are some of the highlights of those discussions able to be heard from the public seating.
- Retired Whatcom County Fire District 7 Fire Chief Gary Russell was honored with a presentation by State Representatives Luanne Van Werven and Vincent Buys.
- City Associate Planner Haylie Miller highlighted three private developments currently in the works. They were the RX Mart pharmacy building to be built on the southwest corner of Alder Street and 3rd Avenue, 4-plex apartments at the south end of Centennial Riverwalk Park and a retail building planned for the south end of Joe Moser Lane by Walgreens.
- The Council voted to implement a six-month emergency moratorium on new storage and mini-storage development applications. There was discussion on ways to avoid the moratorium.
- The Council voted to apply fixed 3% annual increases to the Mayor’s salary beginning in 2018. Councilmember Greg Hanson suggested they increase the Mayor’s monthly salary to $2500 (a 49% increase from the current monthly salary of $1,679) in 2018. This failed to get enough votes. Hanson then proposed increasing the Mayor’s salary to $2500 in 2020 and that motion failed to get seconded.
