FERNDALE, Wash. — The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network and the US Geologic Society (USGS) both report there was a minor earthquake in east Ferndale this morning, August 17th.
The 6:07am earthquake registered at a magnitude of 2.2 and is estimated to have occurred at a depth of 9.98 miles. The epicenter was reported northwest of the intersection of Woodlyn Road and Piper Road.
There were no reports to USGS from anyone saying they felt the earthquake. Experts say quakes of this magnitude are unlikely to be detected at the surface without sensitive instruments.
There have been 2 other relevantly recent minor earthquakes in the Ferndale area. A M1.9 quake occurred the evening of October 31, 2016 and a M2.4 quake occurred February 5, 2017.
