Minor earthquake reported at southern tip of Vancouver Island

An earthquake registering magnitude 2.3 has been reported by seismologists this evening about 10:06pm.

The earthquake was centered approximately 12 miles west of Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island (50 miles west-southwest of Ferndale). Initial reports indicate it occurred at a depth of about 20 miles.

Earthquakes in the magnitude range of 2 to 4 are considered “minor.” Minor earthquakes are likely only detectable by people in the nearby vicinity. Of approximately 100 people who reported feeling the earthquake, only 3 were not located on the island. They were in Port Angeles, 25 miles to the south.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage from the earthquake.
