UPDATED: Man arrested for armed robbery in Bellingham was awaiting trial for armed robbery and armed assault

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A 20-year-old Bellingham man is facing a 1st degree robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm charges in Whatcom County Superior Court resulting from reported robbery in Bellingham on April 13th. At the time, he was out of custody after posting a bond promising to appear in the same court in another trial where he faces multiple counts of armed robbery and assault resulting from an incident in Lynden in February of 2020.

Landon Marshall Gudde, age 20, was arrested by Bellingham Police on May 20th after probable cause was developed by Bellingham Police after they investigated a report of an armed robbery that occurred on April 13th. The victims said they were walking out of a business on Yew Street when an adult and a juvenile approached them. The adult lifted his shirt to display a pistol and began taking items from the victims’ pockets and pulling jewelry off them. The 2 assailants then fled on foot down a nearby alley.

The victims told police they got in their car and began to leave when they encountered the 2 assailants again. They exchanged words and the adult punched the driver-side back seat window, breaking it. The victims then drove away.

The victims told police they knew both assailants through a mutual friend and identified the adult as Gudde.

Gudde has prior felony convictions and is unable to legally possess a firearm as a result.

Gudde was out of custody at the time after posting a $50,000 bond while awaiting trial for an incident that occurred in a Lynden Park on February 5, 2020.

In that incident, Gudde is suspected of arranging to meet 3 people in the park to purchase drugs. According to an affidavit prepared by Lynden Police, after the 3 arrived and were joined by Gudde, 2 armed juvenile assailants appeared and ordered everyone to get out of the vehicle. Gudde ran away while the assailants focused on the other 3. After robbing the victims, the assailants ran off in the same direction as Gudde. 1 of the assailants returned to the vehicle and shot 1 of the victims in the arm. That victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

On May 20th, Bellingham Police officers responded to a report of Gudde having been seen leaving the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Texas Street as a passenger in a Toyota Camry according to BPD Lieutenant Claudia Murphy in an email to Whatcom News. Officers located the car and initiated a traffic stop at E Street and Cornwall Avenue. The driver of the Toyota pulled into a parking lot.

The officers gave warnings on their public address system that Gudde was under arrest and needed to stay seated with his hands up. The passenger side car door opened and Gudde got out of the car, not with hands up but holding a backpack. Gudde was yelling at the officer and when told again he was under arrest he took off running.

The officers radioed they were in a foot pursuit and another officer reported seeing Gudde running near D Street toward Whatcom Middle School during school hours. A short foot pursuit ensued and he slowed his pace due to fatigue but kept walking and ignoring commands to get on the ground.

Due to his actions, his propensity to flee and the need to get him into physical custody before he could commit further violent acts, the officer felt it necessary and safest to get Gudde to the ground for hand cuffing. Pulling down his shoulders, the officer was able to get him to the ground and after a second officer arrived, was able to gain physical control of him and placed him into handcuffs. He was offered medical care, which he declined, and was transported to the Whatcom County Jail.

As of May 25th, Gudde remained in custody in the Whatcom County Jail pending an $80,000 bond and promising to appear in court to face the latest charges.
