Last night Ferndale Police arrested a suspect who had over 250 pieces of mail from over 30 Ferndale addresses in their possession. Neighbors in the affected neighborhoods who suspect their mail may have been stolen are advised to contact the Ferndale Post Office.
Lieutenant Bill Hatchett of the Ferndale Police told Discover Ferndale this morning, about 2AM last night Ferndale Police officers were dispatched to a call about a suspicious vehicle in the area of Pine Drive and Sunshine Drive. The vehicle was seen stopping and looking into mail boxes.
A short time later, a vehicle matching the description reported and its driver were located and contacted by officers. The driver was in possession of 257 pieces of individual pieces of mail addressed to over 34 different addresses in the immediate area. According to Whatcom County Jail records, Wendell Lee Davidson, age 31, was booked this morning for possession of stolen mail (a class C felony in Washington State) and 3rd degree driving while license suspended.
According to Hatchett,
Due to the large amount of recovered mail, it has been returned to the Ferndale Post Office for re distribution. If anyone in the greater Thornton, Pine Dr., Sunshine Dr., Shannon Ave., Heather Dr. Church Rd. etc. area neighborhoods suspects they are missing any mail items, they are encouraged to contact the local Post Office.
Ferndale Police took the opportunity to remind and encourage neighbors to check and retrieve their mail on a daily basis to reduce the risk of mail theft.
Davidson has an extensive criminal history according to Whatcom Superior Court records including multiple charges for theft, burglary and check fraud since 2002.
