Magnitude 4.0 earthquake detected west of San Juan Island

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Seismologists with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PSNS) reported a magnitude 4.0 earthquake was detected about 4:05am on Thursday, September 26th, west of San Juan Island.

The earthquake was determined to have an epicenter 11 miles northeast of Victoria, BC (about 30 miles from Whatcom County) and a depth of about 31.7 miles.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake was reported to have been felt by some in western Whatcom County.

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake is at the low end of the “Light earthquake” range of M4 to M4.9. Earthquakes in this range may be felt locally and may cause minor damage.
