Updated: Lummi Police officer shot, injured while investigating N Red River crash

FERNDALE, Wash. — After midnight on Monday, July 28, 2025, a Lummi Nation Police Department (LNPD) officer radioed dispatch he was out with a motor vehicle crash in the 3200 block of N Red River Road. Seconds later he reported having been shot and requested assistance.

According to unconfirmed law enforcement radio transmissions from the scene at the time, multiple law enforcement agencies responded. A law enforcement vehicle was used to transport the injured officer to the hospital.

Roads in the area were closed while a perimeter was setup and search for the suspect conducted. K9 units were tracking from the scene of the crash while unmanned aerial units (aka drones) were being deployed.

As of 8am on Monday, July 28, 2025, road closures were still being reported while an apparent search for the shooter continued in the area.

Lummi Indian Business Council (LIBC) offices and Lummi Indian College main campus were reported closed while the police activity continued.

Lummi Communications issued the following statement about 8:45am.

This morning, an LNPD officer was shot during a routine traffic stop on North Red River Road. The officer is currently receiving medical care. We are keeping them and their family in our thoughts and prayers.

LNPD is actively investigating the situation with multiple agencies to locate the suspect. An Incident Command Center has been set up at the Silver Reef Casino Resort area and some roads are closed for the investigation.

Out of caution, LIBC offices are closed until further notice. There is no immediate threat to the community, and the situation is under control. We ask that everyone stay clear of the area and allow officers to do their work.

Bellingham Police reported the suspect in this incident had been taken into custody as of 1:40pm.
