LUMMI ISLAND, Wash. — Officials with the Ferry Division of Whatcom County Public Works announced about 3:20pm today, Thursday, December 18, 2025, they had suspended service of the Whatcom Chief ferry between Gooseberry Point and Lummi Island.
Officials said service has been suspended indefinitely due to high winds and a damaged dolphin on the Lummi Island terminal.
The National Weather Service currently has a wind advisory in effect through 11pm tonight. The advisory is due to expected gusts up to 45mph.
Ferry officials said to expect an update around 7pm.
5:40pm update: Officials report the ferry has returned to service.
