Ferry service between Gooseberry Point and Lummi Island was suspended temporarily last night about 9:30pm due to “a mechanical problem with a rudder.” Service has again been suspended today due to the same issue.

Whatcom County Public Works (WCPW) announced about 9am that service was being suspended as they await the arrival of a service contractor. At that time, they estimated service was suspended until at least 3pm.

Diagnosis and repairs are on-going regarding the unforeseen mechanical problem with a rudder on the Whatcom Chief, according to WCPW. Passengers are advised to “plan for no ferry service today into this afternoon/early evening.”

Update 2:30pm:
The WCPW says, “Rudder repairs are still ongoing. No estimated return to service time is available.”

Update 7:15pm
WCPW said the repairs are done and the Whatcom Chief has returned to service.
