LUMMI ISLAND, Wash. — Officials with the Ferry Division of Whatcom County Public Works announced about 9:30am today, October 25th, they had suspended service of the vehicle ferry, Whatcom Chief, between Gooseberry Point and Lummi Island.

They cited an issue with the Whatcom Chief’s steering system as the reason for the service interruption. No estimate for resuming service was available.

UPDATE 11:25am – Ferry service has tentatively resumed after a system assessment according to Ferry Division officials. They advised riders to stay home today if possible in case additional issues occur and service is suspended again. A specialist is scheduled to evaluate the ferry’s systems. It is expected those evaluations should not impact service.
