The constitution guarantees the right to peacefully assemble in order to advocate or protest important issues. This right does not extend to rioting. Yet, the ongoing chaos happening in Seattle and Portland is met with silence and complicity from their city leaders. We know what starts in Seattle often spreads statewide. How long before the violence comes to Whatcom County? And why won’t Democratic leaders, including our governor, speak out and act against riots, destruction as well as the threats and violence against citizens and police?
The Whatcom Democrats look to be adopting the same radical policies of the Seattle City Council. They recently introduced a resolution called “Reimagining Policing and Public Safety” [link to draft resolution added by editor]. Demands include:
- reducing law enforcement budgets
- a significant force reduction of badged patrol officers
- decriminalizing offenses such as loitering, disorderly conduct, public urination, etc.
- terminating all police school resource officers
This sounds reckless at best and deadly at worst. Voters need to know if Democratic candidates Rep. Shewmake and Alicia Rule support the Whatcom Democrat’s resolution. Where is their public condemnation of the horrific lawlessness happening in our cities?
A stable society is dependent on the rule of law being enforced. We cannot have our elected officials be complicit with this chaos.
