Parents were heading out to pick up their students from the first day of school when a thunder and lightning storm rolled in and with it areas of pouring rain.
As if marking a definitive end to a mostly dry and warm summer, the few days have been filled with one of the biggest windstorms in the last decade, knocking out power to thousands, and today’s lightning storm bringing more wind and torrential rain.
While nearby Bellingham stayed relatively dry, Ferndale got doused by this isolated storm. About a half-dozen lightning strikes were recorded between Main Street and Slater Road west of the Nooksack River.
While there were some significant power fluctuations as the storm rolled through, no storm-related outages have been reported the only outage appeared to have occurred in the neighborhood of Smith Road and Northwest Drive. Unfortunately, that included Windward High School. Students had already been dismissed and the school office remained open, but telephones were down. The School District advised anyone needing to call into Windward to call the district office at 360-383-9200 or leave a message at 360-410-6831.
Elementary bus transportation was impacted by the weather as well. According to the School District:
We anticipate delays may be up to 15 minutes, but that’s only an estimate.
The Whatcom Chief ferry run to Lummi Island was delayed 30 minutes which will impact subsequent runs.
Radar (as of 3pm) indicates more of the same may follow off-and-on for a couple hours.
