CUSTER, Wash. — Law enforcement activity in the area of Olson Road and Grandview Road has resulted in the temporary closure of both roads since about 7:15pm today, June 22nd.
The public is encouraged to avoid the area until further notice.
Update 10pm: Grandview Road was reopened through the area but Olson Road north of Grandview Road remains closed.
Update 9:30am 6/23/23: Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Deb Slater told Whatcom News that deputies responded to a suicidal suspect near the intersection of Olson and Grandview Roads about 7pm. The armed suspect stated they were intent on shooting a family member and then themselves. The family member had been shot at by the suspect but was not injured and was able to flee the scene. The suspect subsequently suffered a self-inflicted gunshot injury. Deputies provided first aid and the suspect was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center by emergency medical personnel. The suspect later died from the gunshot injury.
