Updated: Large response to commercial fire closes Grandview Road

FERNDALE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the 2000 block of Grandview Road, east of I-5, about 5:05pm, Friday, January 13th.

The section of Grandview Road, between Enterprise Road and I-5 was temporarily closed due to the large response.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 Assistant Fire Chief Ben Boyko told Whatcom News they arrived to find smoke coming from an unoccupied unit in a multi-unit commercial building. Firefighters were able to gain access to the unit and knock down the fire. Smoke had reached neighboring units in the building and efforts to exhaust the smoke were made.

No civilians or firefighters were injured.

Firefighters remained on scene until about 7pm.

Boyko said several firefighters had responded to a car fire nearby on I-5 near Portal Way and continued to this call after putting out the car fire, adding to the response.

The Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
