BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to Lakeway Drive under the I-5 overpass about 9:30pm on Saturday, September 3rd, due to a report of a car versus bicyclist collision.

Initial radioed reports from the scene were that the victim was located west of the overpass and injured.

Bellingham Police Department Lieutenant Claudia Murphy told Whatcom News via email that it appeared the bicyclist had been traveling against traffic on the north shoulder of Lakeway Drive heading east toward the southbound I-5 off-ramp. The vehicle was southbound on the off-ramp and making a right turn onto Lakeway Drive when the 2 collided.

Sunset was about 7:45pm on Saturday and it was determined the bicyclist lacked proper lighting to be safely riding in the dark conditions at 9:30pm. The driver of the vehicle was not able to see the cyclist and the collision was the result according to Murphy.

The bicyclist fell off the bike, sustained a leg injury and was transported by aid crews to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center.

The cyclist was given a verbal warning for the lack of lighting equipment.

There was no damage to the vehicle.
