FERNDALE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the northbound I-5 off-ramp at the Main Street interchange in Ferndale about 4:45pm today, Monday, December 5th, due to a report of an injury crash.
Northbound traffic was backed up over 2 miles past the Slater Road interchange as a result of the blocked off-ramp and emergency vehicles occupying the right lane.
By 5pm, it was reported both mainline lanes had been reopened and traffic was able to get past the crash scene.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding told Whatcom News it was a 2-car crash. While she could not confirm the vehicle was involved, there had been a report of a wrong-way hit-and-run crash in the area just prior.
Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko said there were 2 cars in the initial collision and a 3rd was unable to avoid colliding with them. There were 2 patients transported from the scene to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center, 1 via a medic unit via advanced life support (ALS) protocol and the other via ambulance via basic life support (BLS) protocol.
