FERNDALE, Wash. — 1 person was transported to a Bellingham hospital this morning after a 2-vehicle crash at the intersection of W Smith Road and Pacific Highway.

First responders were dispatched to the intersection about 9:30am this morning, August 16th, where a full-size pickup truck and a passenger car had collided.

Ferndale Police Sergeant Kevin Davis said a Toyota sedan was in the process of turning onto W Smith Road from southbound Barrett Road when it was struck in the driver’s door by a westbound Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 personnel had to remove the driver’s door from the Toyota in order to extricate the driver who was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries according to Fire Chief Larry Hoffman. The Chevrolet driver refused aid at the scene.

There were no citations or infractions written to either driver according to Davis but police requested that the Toyota driver be required to re-test with Department of Licensing.

The Toyota was hauled from the scene while the pickup truck was able to be towed from the scene by another pickup.

I think that it’s time to put a four way stop sign at that intersection. Way too many accidents there. I just hope that no one gets killed before they do .

I’ve had to brake hard for traffic entering Smith from the north off Labounty and Barrett twice in the last two days. The worst was a driver who barrelled on through without slowing down, let alone stopping. I would prefer traffic circles to 4-way stops. I suspect that part of the reason for these incidents is that many times during the day, there is no traffic and a stop seems superfluous. I think the traffic circles on Slater handle similar traffic well.
