I-5 lanes south of Bellingham shutdown due to downed lines

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — All lanes of northbound and southbound I-5 were shutdown about 1am today, November 15th, due to downed trees and lines.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Rocky Oliphant said all lanes of northbound and southbound I-5 were closed in the area of the N Lake Samish interchange (milepost 246).

First responders were dispatched to the area at 1:05am due to reports of downed trees and arcing wires in the lanes.

Oliphant told Whatcom News at 1:50am they were waiting on Puget Sound Energy crews and an excavator to arrive at the scene so that the trees could be removed. No estimate for when the lanes would reopen was available.

UPDATE 4:10am – Southbound lanes were reopened according to WSP.
UPDATE 4:25am – Northbound and southbound lanes were reopened according to WSP.

A detour was set up via Chuckanut Drive (SR11) for all but truck traffic.

Puget Sound Energy reported an power outage in the area that began at 12:58pm impacting over 500 of their customer addresses.
