I-5 crashes keep troopers busy on sunny Sunday afternoon

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers responded to multiple crashes on I-5 during an exceptionally cold but sunny afternoon on Sunday, January 29th.

According to WSP Trooper Kelsey Harding, troopers were dispatched about 1:50pm to the median south of the Grandview Road interchange due to a report of a rollover crash. This was a 2-vehicle crash with a pickup that rolled ending up in the median. Harding said this was logged as a non-injury crash and both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene.

Later, WSP troopers were dispatched to the northbound lanes of I-5 near the Iowa Street interchange about 3:50pm due to a report of a single-vehicle crash. This was a single-vehicle non-injury crash and the car ended up in median. Error, group does not exist! Check your syntax! (ID: 11)

About 4:05pm were dispatched to report of a multi-vehicle crash in approximately the same area. WSP troopers’ collision reports referenced up to 11 different vehicles involved in multiple collisions, all non-injury with 8 vehicles needing to be towed from the scene.

While first responders were partially blocking a lane, traffic was able to continue through the crash scene. All lanes were cleared and reopened to all traffic by 6:35pm.

Northbound I-5 traffic was reported backed-up about 3 miles to the Old Fairhaven Parkway interchange.

Information regarding citations issued and causes for the crashes were not immediately available.
