Horse barn destroyed in Everson fire, horses saved

EVERSON, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to a report of a barn fire in the 1200 block of Central Road in Everson on Wednesday, March 8th, about 6:40am.

North Whatcom Fire & Rescue (NWFR) Division Chief Shaun Ward told Whatcom News the first units to arrive had to travel about a quarter mile from the road to reach the 20-foot by 40-foot horse barn set in berry fields.

Bellingham Fire Department and Whatcom County Fire District 7 personnel assisted NWFR in providing water supplies from their engines until NWFR tenders arrived.

The fire was declared extinguished after 20 minutes.

Ward said 3 horses inside were evacuated by the person who reported the fire. No animals were harmed and no injuries to people were reported due to the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and heaters used to keep the horses warm are being considered a possibility.
