WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Whatcom County Health and Community Services issued no-contact advisories on June 6th for the following beaches due to high levels of fecal bacteria found during routine water sampling.
Marine Park, the only other Whatcom County beach being monitored, remains open as of June 8th according to the Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE).
Health officials say recent tests at these beaches have detected high levels of bacteria which can pose a health risk to both people and animals. Warning signs have been posted advising that people and animals should avoid contact with the water and sand.
Details about water sampling results at Whatcom County beaches monitored during 2023 are as follows.
- Birch Bay – sampled 8 times, all with excellent results
- Little Squalicum Park – sampled 15 times, consistently low to moderate bacteria levels, with 4 high bacteria spikes
- Marine Park – sampled 14 times, all with excellent results
- Larrabee State Park – sampled 15 times, all with good results
Updated water quality at local beaches is available at the DOE water quality BEACH Program swimming map.
