Just before 3:30pm today, Friday, December 18th, what looked like a “wall cloud” passed over the Ferndale and Custer areas and dropped nearly a half-inch of pellet-sized hail in many areas.
While thunder had been forecast for today, the hail came as an unexpected surprise to many, especially drivers who found themselves going from wet to slippery roads in a matter of just a few minutes.

While the hail storm only lasted about ten minutes in any one location, at the same time temperatures around Ferndale fell 6 degrees in a mere 30 minutes.
Reader Cathy Watson sent Discover Ferndale this picture of the cloud formation as it passed over I-5.
