FERNDALE, Wash. — Governor Jay Inslee announced today, April 6th, during a televised press conference at 2:30pm the current statewide school closure would be extended to the end of the current school year.
Inslee had announced on March 13th, that all Washington State public K-12 classes were to be closed from March 17th, through April 24th.
Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal joined Inslee in making the announcement.

To educators: I know this is no small feat. We have 150 years of experience with our traditional learning model. We can’t make that up overnight. I’m asking our students and our educators to be flexible. We all have our students’ best interests at heart. To families: I know that it’ll be difficult to find a new normal at home. Prior to today’s announcement, the Ferndale School Board announced they would be holding a special meeting tomorrow, April 7th, at 7pm. On the agenda is a resolution instructing Superintendent Linda Quinn to decrease programs and staffing for the 2020-2021 school year due to the anticipated lack of local funding and financial resources due to the failure of the levy proposal placed on the February 2020 Special Election ballot.
According to the draft resolution, “The district anticipates reducing certificated staff by no more than 26 FTE [full-time equivalent] and anticipates reducing classified staff by no more than 40 FTE for the 2020-2021 school year”
A discussion about whether or when to bring another levy proposal to voters is also on the meeting agenda. The school district is allowed by state law to bring another levy proposal to the voters only 1 more time in 2020.
