One of the most frequent complaints received at city hall is about traffic. Second is about streets that have fallen into disrepair over the years. Neither issue is cheap to address but recently the staff at City of Ferndale have been able to secure funds from a variety of sources to enable doing some road repair work on well-traveled routes.
Streets expected to be seeing repair work over the next year or so include:
- Washington Street between Vista Drive and Main Street
- Portal Way between Enterprise and Grandview Roads
- Ferndale Terrace between Hendrickson Avenue and Vista Drive
Add to this list a previously funded project to improve Washington Street between 3rd Avenue and Vista Drive.
Funds come from a couple sources. All but the Ferndale Terrace project are expected to come from the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) which manages street construction and maintenance grants to cities and urban counties throughout Washington State.
According to the city website, expectations for the Washington Street projects
includes repair of deteriorating segments, planing existing pavement, installation of LED lighting, sidewalk, gutter and curb installation and various stormwater and utility improvements.
The Portal Way project is expected to include
digging out substandard sections of the roadway, grinding and overlay.
The Ferndale Terrace project recently received funding from the Washington State Department of Ecology’s grant program to provide funding to projects that utilize green principles to address existing stormwater problems. According to an announcement from the city,
To this end, the City will be using these funds to develop designs for reconstructing Ferndale Terrace between Vista Drive and Hendrickson Avenue by using, to the maximum extent feasible, a pervious pavement system, bioretention facilities and/or compost amended filter strips.
No dates will be set for any of these projects until the design and bid processes are completed.
