Forecasters: Prepare for coldest winter weather so far

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service Seattle office warns of high winds Saturday and Sunday and area temperatures dropping Sunday.

Before the cold snap, a low pressure center moving down Vancouver Island and then eastward Saturday is expected to produce gusty south to southwest winds with some models indicating the potential for 50mph gusts between 8am and 4pm.

On Sunday morning, a modified arctic cold front will move southward through western Washington, bringing the possibility of lowland snow, as well as another round of strong winds say forecasters. Forecasters are saying a High Wind Warning for western Whatcom County may be issued on Sunday.

There is potential for “spotty accumulations of an inch or two” around the Puget Sound lowlands. In other words, some areas will see no frozen precipitation while others may see accumulation.

Weather late Sunday through Tuesday is described simply as dry with “some of the coldest air so far this winter.” Current forecasts show the high temperatures in the low 30s and lows in the lower 20s.
