Forecasters: High winds Sunday, Flooding potential Wednesday

The National Weather Service (NWS) Seattle office has issued a Wind Advisory for tomorrow, Sunday, November 19th, between 6am and 3pm. And, looking further into the week, the forecast for the Nooksack River level in Ferndale raises the possibility of minor flooding.

NWS forecasters say, “Weak high pressure will give way to a vigorous front on Sunday afternoon and evening.” This front is expected to result in another round of powerful southerly winds, with gusts reaching upwards of 55mph, according to the Wind Advisory.

Following later in the week, a pineapple express is expected to arrive. “A strong warm front will arrive by Tuesday. The middle of the week will be mild, rainy, and perhaps windy at times,” according to NWS forecasters.

The current Nooksack River level forecast expects this warm and wet weather will result in a dramatic rise in the river level at Ferndale, nearly reaching the 18-foot mark around 5pm Wednesday.

River flooding of roads in low lying areas near the river often occurs after reaching the 15-foot mark (e.g. Barrett/Paradise Roads) and more road flooding (e.g. Slater Road, Marine Drive) tends to occur after the level has reached the 17- or 18-foot marks depending on much the ground is saturated.

River level forecasts are subject to frequent changes so continuing to monitor the river level forecast over the upcoming days is advised.
