Nearly all federal holidays have been marked by about 150 flags having been put up into and through historic downtown Ferndale. But today, Presidents’ Day, they did not make their usual appearance.
Ferndale Kiwanis members are no strangers to getting up before nearly everyone else and setting up the flags on about a half-dozen days each year, regardless of the weather. But today, the weather threw them a curve ball.
After lugging the flags to Main Street, it was soon discovered the holes in the sidewalks that the flags are inserted into were full of solid ice.
According to Kiwanis member, Cathy Watson, “They tried for quite a while but just didn’t have a way to get the ice out.”
The next holiday the flags are expected to make their appearance is Memorial Day on May 28th. It is likely ice will not be a problem then.
