Neighbors reported a vessel at dock was listing early this morning and then toppled over and ended up on the bottom of the channel after a loud noise was heard.

The fishing vessel, Coral Sea, had been an eye-sore for years according to those who live in the area. It was being moored on a dock next to another apparently derelict vessel (see map below).

This morning it was reported the vessel was listing. By the time authorities arrived, the vessel was on the bottom of the channel and leaning against the dock, according to Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Director of Emergency Management John Gargett. The vessel was unoccupied at the time.

Multiple agencies responded including a marine rescue crew from the nearby Phillips 66 refinery. Remaining on scene late today were the Coast Guard and Whatcom Emergency Management. According to Coast Guard personnel, their purpose was to contain and remove leaking pollutants and hazardous materials. It was estimated approximately 50 gallons had been picked up by the sorbent booms and pads by 5pm. The cause of the vessel’s sinking had yet to be determined.

The owner was seen working to minimize damage to the dock as the tide was rising, pushing the dock into the upper mechanics of the vessel, causing the dock to lean into the vessel.

A fishing net in good condition could be seen located at the stern of the vessel. The owner said he was preparing to take the Coral Sea fishing in Alaska according to Gargett.

Since the channel and dock are privately owned, it did not appear any outside agency would be mandating how soon the vessel is refloated. Coast Guard personnel speculated a crane on a barge would be required given the size of the vessel.
