Firefighters deal with large outside fire on commercial property

FERNDALE, Wash. — Firefighters were dispatched today, September 7th about 12:50pm due to a report of a large outside fire on a manufacturing business property on Salashan Parkway.

As of 1:15pm, crews from Whatcom County Fire District 7 and North Whatcom Fire and Rescue were on scene battling the fire.

There were reports of a possible threat to a structure and winds were feeding the fire.

As of 1:55pm, the 7000 block of Portal Way north of Grandview Road was closed as firefighters with Bellingham Fire Department began attacking the fire from the railroad side. It was reported BNSF had halted rail traffic due to the fire.

As of 4:20pm, Portal Way was reopened to all traffic.

WCFD7 Fire Chief Larry Hoffman told Whatcom News there were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.

The cause remained unknown according to Hoffman and Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene into tomorrow working with an excavator in order to ensure all fires are out in the stacks of absorbent material that caught fire.
