Fire in vacant W Axton house appears suspicious

FERNDALE, Wash. — Firefighters quickly got control of a residential fire on W Axton Road shortly after noon today but law enforcement also got involved.

Firefighters with Whatcom County Fire District 7 were dispatched to a residential fire in the 1200 block of W Axton Road about 12:10pm today, November 22nd.

WCFD7 Division Chief Justin Iverson said the house appeared unoccupied but he was aware law enforcement had a report of someone having been seen at the house just before the fire. Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies could be seen talking with neighbors.

A male was reportedly treated by a WCFD7 aid crew and released into law enforcement custody at the scene according to unconfirmed emergency radio transmissions at the time. No other injuries were reported according to Iverson.

Traffic was detoured through the Deer Creek neighbor while W Axton Road was closed to through traffic. The road remained closed until approximately 2:20pm.

The structure suffered significant smoke and fire damage according to Iverson.

The Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office was dispatched to investigate Iverson said.
