CUSTER, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 6:45am on Tuesday, September 20th, to the I-5 median between the Birch Bay-Lynden Road and Grandview Road interchanges due to reports of a brush fire in the median.

Firefighters with North Whatcom Fire & Rescue responded with a fire engine and brush truck which were able to quickly knock down the fire in a matter of minutes. The left lane was shut down while firefighters worked on the fire.
Washington State Patrol said all lanes had been reopened by 7:15am.
The cause of the fire was not immediately available.
A WSP official noted the day prior, “As good of a time as any to remind people that it is illegal to throw ANY objects out of their vehicle. We are seeing more and more fires across our region. The grass is extremely dry. A lit cigarette thrown from a car can easily create something much larger.”
