UPDATED: Morning fatality fire closes Guide Meridian

LAUREL, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 6am on Tuesday, July 4th,to the area near the intersection of Laurel Road and Guide Meridian due to reports of a structure fire.

The Washington State Department of Transportation reported all lanes of the guide in both directions were closed while fire crews respond to a fire as of 6:25am.

Update 8:30am: WSDOT reports all but 1 southbound lane have been reopened to all traffic.

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue (NWFR) Division Chief Shaun Ward told Whatcom News firefighters arrived to find a single-story residential structure on fire.

2 occupants were able to escape uninjured via a front door. 1 occupant escaped via a window and was transported by medics under advance life support (ALS) protocol to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center. Another occupant was found inside the structure deceased.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Firefighters from NWFR, Ferndale, Bellingham and Lynden responded.
