BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Fire District and North Whatcom Fire & Rescue (NWFR) firefighters were dispatched to the intersection of Britton Road and Mount Baker Highway about 1:15am, July 29th, due to a report of a structure fire.

NWFR Division Chief Shaun Ward told Whatcom News firefighters arrived to find fire visible on the first and second floors of a unit in a 4-unit building under construction.
Firefighters were unable to bring their apparatus onsite, having to stage on Mount Baker Highway instead and drag hoses around the building. Water cannons mounted atop fire trucks were also used to reach the fire. Firefighters were able to eventually get the fire knocked down within 45 minutes.
Fire damage was limited to 1 unit within the building with only smoke damage in the adjacent units. Ward credited adherence to building codes for limiting the spread of the fire to the single unit.

There were no occupants, and no injuries were reported.
Bellingham Fire Department investigators are investigating.
