At the last Ferndale School District (FSD) Board meeting, the Ferndale High School (FHS) Future Farmers of America (FFA) Veterinary Science Team briefed board members and the audience about their recent trip to Indianapolis, Indiana, where they competed at the National FFA Veterinary Science Career Development Event.

Out the many teams from across the nation competing, the FHS team came home with the 5th place. Team members are Jadyn Denham, Ryan England, Elain Ding, Alexis Kudsk, Fidelina (Maggie) Ortez and Kailey Robertson.

According to a FFA press release,

The National FFA Veterinary Science CDE is a competitive event that tests the participant’s ability to apply veterinary science knowledge and skill in practical settings as well as identify breeds, parasites and equipment. Participants also complete a written exam and respond to scenario questions about current topics in the veterinary industry. Teams present to a panel of judges about the roles and responsibilities of the veterinary team in a variety of situations involving patients from companion animal to large animal. Teams competed at local and state levels for the privilege of representing their state at the National FFA Convention & Expo.

During their presentation to the board, team members discovered soon after the event that only three points out of a total of 1600 separated them from the first place team.

The FHS FFA Veterinary Science Team has participated in the FFA Nationals for the last three years. They finished in 4th place last year and 3rd place the year prior.

FFA is an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. Team coaches are Tony Torretta and Lisa Abbott.
