This Friday, October 16th, an old cross-county rivalry will play out again the Ferndale High School football field. And this year’s matchup should be a must-see given this year’s matchup and some national attention.
First, both teams are evenly matched with 3 wins and 1 loss this year (4 and 2 overall). In further comparison, Ferndale has allowed 121 points while scoring 179 and Lynden has allowed 98 points while scoring 200.
Second, Friday night’s game is getting national attention from The Great American Rivalry Series, which has chosen this Whatcom County matchup as one of the top high school football rivalries across the country. Part of the attention will come from a live Internet broadcast of the game on what is called the Great American Rivalry Sports Network. In addition, according the Great American Rivalry website,
- The winning team will be presented with the Great American Rivalry Series Championship Trophy.
- One player will be selected as the game’s “Most Valuable Player” and awarded a trophy and medal.
- The top senior student athlete from each school will receive the Rivalry Scholar Student-Athlete Scholarship Award.
Third, tailgating is making a comeback at Friday night’s game. Several organizations and businesses will be set up by the auditorium serving food and providing fun games and activities.
Tickets can be purchased at FHS’s ASB store (next to the main office) until 3pm weekdays and at the gate. Admission to the game for adults and high school students (including visiting students) without ASB Card is $6.00. FHS students with their ASB card get in for free.
