Ferndale Storm Watch Updates

5:45pm – The first influence of a low pressure center passing closely offshore has begun to be felt in the Ferndale area as the wind direction just swung from northeast to east. Winds remain mild with sustained winds about 5mph with gusts just over 10mph.

6:05pm – According to a weather station near Ferndale High School (its measurements will likely be cited a lot tonight) sustained wind speed just jumped from 8mph to 21mph. That’s more than the gusts up to this point.

6:15pm – A 47mph gust was just recorded in Ferndale. A reader reported a 50mph gust in Sandy Point at the same time.

6:40pm – Looking at weather stations around the region, coastal locations remain the only ones currently with sustained winds of over 35mph.

7:30pm – Wind gusts have been relatively mild in the 30 to 40mph range for the past hour. One forecast model had estimated peak gusts over 70mph would occur between 10pm and 1am in the Ferndale area.

8pm – Wind gusts have steadily increased from 40mph to 50mph over the past 45 minutes (see graph).

Southeast to south winds 25 to 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph this evening. Winds will ease to 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph after midnight.

The previous revision said to expect 25 to 45mph winds with gusts near 70mph.

8:30pm – As the low pressure center moves northward offshore, winds are slowly changing from easterly to southerly.

8:35pm – Recent gusts around the area vary widely (see map below).

8:45pm – NWS recently communicated the following information,

The surface low has moved into Central Vancouver Island, and winds have eased for the Central Washington coast and South Interior areas. The high wind warning has been expired at those locations.

Winds are still strong along the North Coast and Strait as well as the North Interior, San Juan’s into the Admiralty Inlet area. The high wind warning remains in effect, with winds 20 to 35 mph, gusting to 60 mph still a possibility there.

10:45pm – NWS has downgraded the High Wind Warning to a Wind Advisory in effect until 2am. The wind forecast was adjusted as well.

South 20 to 35 MPH with local gusts to 45 MPH

11:30pm – We are happy to conclude coverage of the storm that really wasn’t. The best of all possible outcomes.
