Updated: Ferndale school evacuated after receiving bomb threat

FERNDALE, Wash. — Officials with the Ferndale School District alerted families that Ferndale High School (FHS) had been evacuated. The notification was sent about 12:15pm on October 3rd.

The building has been evacuated safely, please refrain from coming to campus. Law enforcement is working to assess the building. Updates will be provided as they are available.

The City of Ferndale said Golden Eagle Drive and Shuksan Drive had been closed to non-emergency personnel.

What-COMM 911 issued a statement saying, “The Ferndale School District is responsible for information on child pickup. Please leave emergency phone lines clear by not calling 911 for this information.”

The Ferndale School District announced about 1pm that all extra-curricular activities were cancelled for the day.

We will begin to release students from FHS this afternoon.

In this order:

  • Students who walk will be released first
  • Followed by students who drove to school (with siblings only)
  • All remaining students will be bused to a different location for pickup
  • Pickup location will be shared shortly

About 6pm, Ferndale Police and the School District issued a joint statement.

On October 3, 2024, the Ferndale School District, Ferndale Police Department, and local authorities responded to an anonymous report of a potential bomb threat at Ferndale High School. While swift action was taken immediately out of an abundance of caution, no credible threat has been identified at this time. All students and staff were safely evacuated, and law enforcement conducted a thorough investigation of the premises.

It is important to note that this incident may be related to a nationwide “swatting” effort. Swatting involves the false reporting of a serious emergency, such as a bomb threat, with the intent to cause disruption and fear. Until the investigation is complete, it remains unknown if today’s threat is connected to this nationwide “swatting” effort. The Ferndale School District, Ferndale Police Department, and City of Ferndale are closely monitoring the situation in cooperation with all agencies involved.
