FERNDALE, Wash. — The Ferndale Police Department announced today they recently donated an unspecified number of bicycles to a program that will send them, along with 100s of other donated bikes, to Rwanda.
The Ferndale Police announcement quoted organizer Terry Mahoney as saying, “The people over there need bicycles desperately. This allows children to get to school, and doctors to get to appointments.”
According to a March 24th story published by The Northern Light bike donations were being accepted at the Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club. In that story, Mahoney said there is a 40-foot-long shipping container in Surrey, BC that had about 250 bicycles packed into it. When they have collected 500 bicycles, the container will be sent to Rwanda where the bikes will be reassembled and given out and the container will be converted into a bike shop.
