Speed and no headlights are cited by the Washington State Patrol in their report of a fatality rollover on Birch Bay-Lynden Road east of Enterprise Road.

The Washington State Patrol responded to the report of the crash this morning after 2am.  WSP said a Ferndale man, Ruben Mondragon-Gutierrez, age 54, was driving westbound on Birch Bay-Lynden Road at a high rate of speed and without headlights. Mondragon-Gutierrez drove off the road on the north side, overcorrected ending up in the eastbound lane and then drove into the ditch on the north side causing the 1991 Toyota Camry to roll several times.

According to WSP, Mondragon-Gutierrez was not wearing his seat belt and was dead at the scene. The Toyota was declared a total loss.

According to an article by the Bellingham Herald, Lynden Police had been pursuing Mondragon-Gutierrez but called off the pursuit after he turned off his lights.
