According to case reports filed by Ferndale Police personnel and others who responded to the crash scene or were involved in the subsequent investigation, 3 vehicles were involved and all suffered heavy damage. Victims in 2 pickup trucks traveling northbound on Church Road reported seeing a SUV traveling southbound. The SUV suddenly crossed over the center line, colliding into the 2 pickups. The SUV had damage on all sides and the roof which led initial responders to believe the SUV had spun and/or rolled. The front end of the SUV was partially sheared off.
Whatcom County Fire Department 7 (WCFD7) personnel had to use rescue equipment to extricate the driver of the SUV and the driver of 1 of the pickups. They provided life-saving efforts to the driver of the SUV but declared the 29-year-old Ferndale woman deceased at the scene.
WCFD7 aid personnel provided the occupants of both pickup trucks at the scene with medical attention and transported 2 to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center. 1 was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle due to their injuries.
Ferndale Police visited the nearby address of the SUV’s registered owner in an effort to notify the deceased driver’s next-of-kin. They arrived to find no one there but did notice open exterior doors and a low-profile fence knocked over in the yard and other signs someone may have driven away in a hurry. Given the unusual circumstances, officers did a security check of the house which located the SUV driver’s cellphone and wallet.
Officers eventually made contact with the SUV driver’s father.
Nowhere in the documents provided does it say the investigation into the crash has concluded.
