Ferndale family involved in fatal Blaine crash

Members of a Ferndale family were in one of three vehicles involved in a fatal crash in Blaine yesterday evening.

Fire, aid and law enforcement were dispatched to the intersection of Boblett Street and State Route 543 in Blaine on a report of a multivehicle crash. Washington State Patrol reports a semi truck southbound on SR-543 failed to stop and collided with a vehicle stopped at the traffic signal. That vehicle then struck another vehicle also stopped at the signal.

James and Shannon Vande Kamp of Ferndale, along with three children, were in the second vehicle struck. According to WSP, James and a 15-year old child in the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe were injured and transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.

The 2016 Volvo semi tractor was driven by Manjinder Singh, age 32, of Surrey, British Columbia. Singh collided with a 2003 Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by Christian Villegas, age 40, also of Surrey. Villegas died later at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center according to WSP.

Traffic was detoured around the crash scene while SR-543 was closed between I-5 and H Street for several hours.
