Ferndale area windstorm packed a punch with little impact

Computer animation based on current and forecast weather data.

Wind gust speeds exceeded 60mph for the first time today about 2:15pm according to a weather station located near Ferndale High School. Prior to that, there had been a few wind gusts in the mid-50mph range.

Between 2:30pm and 3pm, wind speeds could be seen quickly decreasing as forecasters had expected.

While there have been a couple localized power outages (Sandy Point Heights, Lummi Island) and a report of tree branches in a power line, there have not been any other reported problems attributed to the powerful winds.

This is the 3rd such windstorm this month making it likely weak trees and branches that pose a hazard had already been dropped by the earlier storms.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 6pm this evening.
