BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to a motorcycle crash on Lakeway Drive under the I-5 overpass at about 8:20pm, Thursday, June 30th.
A Washington State Patrol (WSP) press memo said the 2003 Honda VTX1800R motorcycle had been northbound on I-5 when it failed to negotiate a curve, went into the median, struck a guardrail, crossed over a cement barrier and dropped down to Lakeway Drive.
WSP Trooper Jacob Kennett said the motorcyclist, later identified as a 37-year-old Blaine man, was declared deceased at the scene.
A 2018 GMC Canyon on Lakeway Drive was damaged by the falling guardrail.
While neither alcohol nor drugs were involved, speed and aggressive driving were cited by WSP as the cause of the crash.
The left lane of northbound I-5 was closed for over an hour and Lakeway Drive at the overpass was fully blocked during the hours-long investigation. Motorists were advised to expect a long closure.
Bellingham Police established a detour around the closure via King Street and Humboldt Street.

What curve did the biker fail to negotiate? It looks fairly straight through there.
