WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 8:30pm Saturday, August 26th, to the intersection of Smith Road and Guide Meridian due to reports of a vehicle versus pedestrian crash.
Washington State Patrol (WSP) said via email that this was a fatality incident.
According to the WSP, a 2016 Hyundai Azera sedan was southbound in the right lane when it struck the pedestrian who was also in the right lane south of Smith Road attempting to remove debris.
The pedestrian, a 44-year-old Bellingham man, was declared dead at the scene.
As of 9:15pm, WSP investigators had been dispatched to the scene and traffic lanes in the area were partially blocked.
About 10:30pm, Washington State Department of Transportation reported all impacted lanes were reopened.
Investigators determined neither drugs nor alcohol were involved. The cause of the crash was still under investigation.
