Updated: Evacuation notice issued near Sedro-Woolley wildfire, closures announced

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — Officials with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) said today, Tuesday, August 29th, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued a Level 2 Evacuation Notice, “Get ready to leave,” for residents on Blue Canyon Road. The notice is due to an approximately 10-acre wildfire on the southeast shoreline of Lake Whatcom that was first detected about 5:30pm yesterday.

Crews with DNR are drawing water via aircraft from Lake Whatcom to fight the fire. As a result, boat launches on Lake Whatcom have been temporarily closed and boat traffic on the lake is being temporarily restricted.

Whatcom County Parks & Recreation (WCPR) reported the Hertz Trail at Lake Whatcom has been closed due to the wildfire.

Update 11:30am: DNR reports the wildfire is approximately 30 acres in size.

Update 1:30pm: WCPR has closed Lake Whatcom Park “for public safety while crews fight wildfires.” Residents are being asked not to fly drones near the wildfire so firefighting aircraft are not hindered as a result of their presence.
