Error on ballots means votes from Sumas voters will not be tallied on levy proposition

SUMAS, Wash. — The Whatcom County Elections Division announced that ballots mailed to City of Sumas voters incorrectly contained a question and contest for Whatcom County Fire District 14 (WCFD14).

Properties in the City of Sumas are in the service area for WCFD14 but not in the taxing district. As a result, voters in Sumas should not have been asked to vote on restoring a property tax levy for WCFD14 but it was included on their ballots.

The following letter has been sent to registered voters in the City of Sumas according to the Whatcom County Auditor’s Office.

Attention Voters living in the City of Sumas,

The ballot you received in the mail for the upcoming November 7, 2023 General Election had a question and a contest for Fire Protection District 14.

It came to our attention that the boundary for Fire Protection District 14 does not include the City of Sumas, therefore any vote cast for the question or contest will not be tallied in the final results for the General Election.

We apologize for the inconvenience and have rectified the fire district boundary. Please contact the Elections Division with any questions at 360-778-5102 or email us at elections@co.whatcom.wa.us . Whatcom County Auditor’s Office (October 30, 2023)
