M4.8 earthquake felt in Ferndale

About 11:39pm on Tuesday, December 29th, an earthquake centered near Vancouver Island was felt by neighbors in Ferndale.

According to the US Geological Service, the earthquake was located between Vancouver Island and San Juan Island, about 35 miles SW from Ferndale. The USGS reported it as a preliminary 4.8-magnitude earthquake and centered at a depth of 26.1 miles.

No tsunami warnings, advisories or watches were issued. There were no reports of significant damage or injuries.

Neighbors’ descriptions varied with some reporting a rumble followed by a jolt and others calling it 30 seconds of “moving and rolling.” Some also reported their animals had been acting skittish and pacing just prior to the movement.

Two other moderate earthquakes occurred on the west coast earlier in the day. One at 5:49pm located 55 miles SW of Barstow, California was M4.7 at a depth of 3 miles and the other at 7:35pm located 55 miles NW of Eureka, California was M4.5 at a depth of 7 miles.

Notably, another earthquake had occurred the same day at 1:21pm, M3.1, located 8 miles NW of Ferndale, California at a depth of 15.8 miles.
