David Lee Tarter, age 37, was booked at Whatcom County Jail on charges of 3rd degree driving while license suspended and attempting to elude police vehicles.
6:30pm
The subject has been transported to the Whatcom County Jail for booking. It appears the vehicle, a gold commercial van, was stopped using the PIT maneuver given the position it came to rest at on the side of the road.
6:00pm
Police reported to What-Comm dispatch they have the subject detained just east of I-5 on Grandview Road. It had been reported that the subject’s vehicle was “smoking badly,” it is not known if engine failure or a strategic maneuver by police was the means by which the subject was stopped and detained.

According to radio transmissions, Ferndale police are pursuing a vehicle reported by a citizen for erratic driving. The subject took off from Slater Road and led officers to the Portal Way exit at speeds around 75mph. The subject exited I-5 and went north on Portal Way. Police performed the PIT maneuver to disable the vehicle but while the subject left the road, he managed to return and headed southbound on Portal. The subject got back on I-5 northbound from Portal Way.
