FERNDALE, Wash. — Family, friends and members of the Ferndale Police and the Ferndale Downtown Association (FDA) gathered this afternoon to pay tribute to former Ferndale Police Chief Michael Knapp who died at age 79 after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a street in Lynden in 2019.
Knapp’s grandson assisted with the installation of a plaque on a memorial bench commissioned by the Ferndale Downtown Association at the corner of 3rd Avenue and Vista Drive.
FDA President Bertella Hansen told those in attendance she hoped Knapp’s abilities as a great listener and advice-giver may benefit anyone who comes to sit and take a moment remembering him.
Knapp was serving as the Interim Chief with the Lynden Police Department at the time of his death. He served as chief of police in Ferndale from 2005 to 2016.
Knapps is the 16th memorial bench installed by the FDA. Click here for a map of the other benches.
